Blogging for money - tips

If you are blogging with the intention of making a few extra dollars or pounds on the side (or becoming a millionaire) the following tip will be worth bearing in mind.

If you are using Google Adsense to monetorize your blog then you might well have noticed that, unless your entire blog focusses on a single, narrowly defined, issue, that Google doesn't immediately post relevant ads.

The reason for this is of course that google doesn't know what your post is about until it has spidered it properly. Until then, it can only supply ads which are either general or fit with other content pages on your blog.

Here's a paradox: You don't want people to visit your newly updated pages. You want them to come later, maybe even a few days later, when the ads are relevant. Obviously relevant ads will make a massive difference to your Click Through Rate, and therefore your bottom line.

How can you stop visitors coming to your site before the page has been spidered and the ads are relevant? Well, you can't. And you don't want to block them anyway.

What you can do is lay off the SEO tricks for a few days. Try this:

Before you start, disable any automatic ping you have set up.

1) Update your google sitemap so that google spiders the page.

2) Check for relevant ads.

3) When they come, and only then, start your SEO for that post.

4) Manually ping the servers you want (using any number of free, online ping sites).

5) take part in discussions on other blogs which deal with the same issue, encouraging people to read your post.

6) Consider submitting to reddit, digg etc, if that kind of thing is up your street.

See what happens!
